Preschool Curriculum

Francis Howell Preschool implements curriculum and instruction that focuses on child development.

Project Construct:
Project Construct is the framework used in the implementation of all experiences in the early childhood programs. Project Construct guiding principles include:

  • Children can best learn through hands-on experiences.

  • Children actively involved in the learning process construct his/her knowledge by participating in developmentally appropriate activities.

  • Opportunities for learning are provided through learning centers set up throughout the classroom, each center dealing with one of the areas of development of the young child. You will see centers in our classrooms that offer learning activities in the areas of language, social development, motor development and intellectual development.

  • The classroom is child centered.

  • Children are provided multiple activity choices throughout their preschool day.

  • Teachers' role is that of facilitator, helping each child gain maximum learning benefit.

Growing with Mathematics:
Preschool implements the "Growing with Mathematics" curriculum which is the pre-kindergarten component of the curriculum that is being taught in our elementary schools. This curriculum provides an excellent foundation for mathematical learning and adds to it a literacy component and social learning that will prepare our preschool children for the elementary schools in our district. This approach allows for the seamless transition from preschool to kindergarten in this core area and gives our students a strong base in mathematical learning as evidenced in our district's MAP scores for math at 3rd grade.

Handwriting without Tears:
The Francis Howell Preschool programs have implemented the curriculum "Handwriting without Tears". This is a developmental based program with multi-sensory materials and activities for children. Children are engaged in learning through their senses of touch, vision, hearing and movement. The developmentally based Pre-K program includes Music and Movement, Wood Pieces, Mat Man, Roll-a-Dough, Stamp and See Screen and Slate and Chalk.

Pre-K Communication Arts Curriculum:
Communication Arts in Francis Howell is aligned vertically from preschool through fifth grade and follows the Missouri State Standards. The content strands are Listening, Speaking, Phonological Awareness, Reading, and Writing. Early literacy skills provide the developmental structure for students to think, understand, analyze and communicate.
